Open the trunk and use a pair of vice grips to grab the end of the spring and pull it down while keeping the rear trunk lid propped up. This allows enough clearance to get the old roller off and slide the new one on. If the roller is already missing it likely has worn a groove into the rod it sat on. This will require you to remove the armature and file the edges off to get the new one on. The battery side is a little more difficult as you will need to move the battery enough to grab the spring. It doesn't have to be removed fully, just out of the way enough to perform the procedure.
