Customer Cars: Tom Daily's 1973 914 Outlaw

We love seeing what exciting projects our customers are currently working on. Every month we would like to showcase a couple of cars in whatever state they are in - on the road or on the rack.



This month's winner is Tom Daily! This is his 1973 914 Outlaw with a modified 2.0 L motor. The car has a pair of Cibie Hood Lights and features a newly installed set of our rubber bumper tops 

 
 
On the inside of the car he has installed custom tartan seat inserts as well as a new carpet set. The car started life without the Appearance Group package so Tom tracked down an OEM center console and installed it to complete the vision he had of his perfect Porsche. 

 


Tom lovingly calls this his Poor Man's Outlaw. The car features a numbers-matching original engine which has been rebuilt from the original 1,970 cc up to 2,056 cc. This is what he believes a sport model could have been, a car with a larger engine minus the additional visual flare of the Appearance Group. 

 


 

This is an awesome example of purpose-driven and understated modifications. Thank you for the great submission Tom!

Customer Cars: Gary Stein's 1974 914 LE Creamsicle

We love seeing what exciting projects our customers are currently working on. Every month we would like to showcase a couple of cars in whatever state they are in - on the road or on the rack.



Our first customer car story is from Gary Stein. Gary's love for Porsches started in 1973 when he got a 1.7 L 914 brand new off the lot. He kept this car around until 1980, when he fell in love with a 1980 silver 924 S and sold his 914 to fund it. After several years and several different rides, Gary never lost his passion for the 914.



Last March he purchased a 1974 914 LE Creamsicle from Paul Miller and after several long months spent restoring the car to original condition he was finally able to start driving it. 


Despite owning a 1986 930 Slantnose,1987 944 Turbo, and 2010 911 GT3, he says this is still his most fun car to drive and it brings him back to his younger days. Thank you for sharing this awesome story Gary!

Customer Cars: Joe Hunt's Palma Green 1973 914 2.0L

We love seeing what exciting projects our customers are currently working on. Every month we would like to showcase a couple of cars in whatever state they are in - on the road or on the rack.

Joe Hunt purchased his Palma Green 1973 914 2.0L as a rolling chassis back in 1995. The car features the original fuel injection which took a huge amount of troubleshooting to get working along with the ignition system. 

 


The eagle eyed readers amongst you may have noticed that Palma Green was not available in 1973, so how did he end up with it? Well, the car has been fully painted 3 times. Unfortunately Joe learned the hard way that you have to pick your painter very carefully as one of the paint jobs came out so poorly it had to immediately be repainted. All that is left for him now is to install plumbing for the heating and upholster the interior with green tartan.



We are always glad to see such a long term project nearing completion, the team wishes you the best of luck in finishing your restoration!

Customer Cars: Mike Carter's Flared 1974 914 Modified 2.0L

This month's winner is Mike Carter! This is his flared 1974 914 with a modified 2.0 L motor.

 


 
The car originally came out of Texas, but Mike bought this 1974 914 in Ohio in 2010 as a roller with motor and trans sitting outside the car on the ground. The old owner was going through a divorce and needed to sell. He had already finished the flares and was beginning to plan out the build on the engine but never got the chance to.

 


 
Mike built a strong 2056 cc 2.0 motor using Keith Black performance pistons/cylinders and a high performance Jake Raby cam, among other upgraded valve train components. The compression was set at 9.1 and he bought new DRD Racing L6 heads and installed a set of rejetted and tuned Weber 40 carbs.

 


 
The flywheel was lightened to 12lbs and an all new clutch assembly was added. He installed a 1974 Porsche 911 front suspension and brakes and upgraded to a 930 Turbo wheel package with 16x7 in the front and 16x9  in the rear.

 
 

 
All of the interior components and upholstery have been refurbished, and nearly every seal and rubber gasket over has been replaced as well. Mike reckons he has taken nearly every nut and bolt off the car at least once. This is certainly one of the more in depth builds we have seen so far and we hope it keeps bringing you joy for years to come. Thank you for the great submission Mike!

Customer Cars: Mark McLaughlin's 1974 914 Father-Son Project

We love seeing what exciting projects our customers are currently working on. Every month we would like to showcase a couple of cars in whatever state they are in - on the road or on the rack.



This month's winner is Mark McLaughlin! This is his 1974 914 father/son project with a modified 2.6 L motor.

 


Starting life as a humble 1974 914/4 1.8 L, this car saw many rough years before arriving in Mark's possession. Mark and his son knew they wanted to create something different from the many other styles of 914 GT tribute cars. They came upon the notion of a “Leichtbau” (which translates from the German language to Lightweight Design) build.



The original engine was swapped for a 2.6L Type IV Horizontal Fan Engine with a unique underbody oil cooler duct system. The decklids and bumpers were all replaced with fiberglass components along with removable fiberglass fenders. The side window glass was replaced with Lexan and a pair of repa style race harnesses were added to the leather seats.



The car is sitting on Jongbloed Modular wheels and Toyo R888 tires with 7.5x15 in the front and 8.5x15 in the rear. It features a moderately aggressive suspension and has newly rebuilt brake calipers. This is a beautiful car with a great story that has only just begun, thank you for the submission Mark!
